The growth of the group has also significantly increased Red Pen Procurement's vendor base and buying power, allowing Red Pen Procurement to pass on the savings to all BD Studios and clients. As Founder and Principal of Banko Design, Melissa oversees the day-to-day operations of a 25+ person team of designers, interior architects, purchasing agents, warehouse staff and office personnel. Designing for an age bracket that deserves gratitude, grace, and respect is an honor I do not take lightly. Ponce Student Suites, a student housing apartment building in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, will be reimagined as a hotel by Stevens & Wilkinson. Built in the 1930s, the structure originally opened as a 58-room hotel before being converted to housing for Atlanta area students in 2014. It must be incredibly durable, ergonomic for the aging body, light in weight for mobility, easy to get in and out of, and so on.

Of the anticipated design, principal Melissa Banko says, “This project seeks to unite past and present and amplify the status of the building as a destination for locals and travelers alike.” The building is located by Ponce City Market, and once housed the beloved nightclub MJQ. Paying tribute to Atlanta history, the design will play up architectural elements original to the structure and incorporate musical motifs. “The five-story addition has a more modern exterior, while the interior portion ties together the history of the building with all the amenities of a new boutique hotel,” says Banko.
